So there I was doing some last minute cramming before my big final in my Biochem class when I suddenly felt like I was going to black out.
I really needed to get a good grade on this exam or else I would be pushing whether or not I would pass the class, and I sure as heck didn’t want to have to take it again.
I was struggling to figure out why I was bottoming out when I should be bright-eyed and bushy-tailed so early in the morning. If I didn’t get it together soon I was going to end up face planting right onto my exam.
I somehow made it to the cafeteria in dire need to eat something. Anything.
My blood sugar was crashing hard, and I needed to get it back up. My brain already felt like a bowl of soggy cereal.
I ended up chowing down a breakfast burrito, which I know isn’t the healthiest but at least it shot up my blood sugar to almost healthy levels so I could function.
Now I didn’t know it at the time but the extra tall glass of orange juice I drank first thing in the morning had something to do with it.
You’d think orange juice is healthy and all so why the heck would it have made my blood sugar sink faster than the Titanic?
Well, orange juice is LOADED with sugars even though they are in the form of fructose. This caused my blood sugar to initially spike only to come crashing down like Katherine Heigl’s career.
So the lesson I learned was to always eat a breakfast burrito first thing in the morning.
Actually, I have since switched over to drinking warm lemon water first thing every morning for a plethora of reasons.
Here are a few of my favorites:
- hydrates you
- alkalizes you
- enhances your mood
- detoxes you
- freshens breath
- aids digestion
- weight loss
Now you’re probably thinking to yourself right now…
“Josh, you must be out yo’ mind if your thinking lemons will alkalize your body. Foo!”
It totally stands to logic that lemons will cause your body to be more acidic rather than help to balance the pH levels in your body.
The reason it does provide alkalization in your body lies in the minerals contained within the lemon itself. Once your body takes in the lemon water there are metabolic processes that occur in your bloodstream that use the minerals to make it alkalinizing.
This wouldn’t work with other fruits such as oranges because the sugars would override the minerals, therefore, leaving it acidic.
So try drinking some warm lemon water first thing in the morning (I say warm water because it’s easier to digest thus absorb). Try not to eat for at least 20 minutes after drinking it to allow proper absorption.
I usually wake up, drink my lemon water and then start cooking breakfast. Then once my breakfast is ready to eat it should already be well absorbed by now.
Also, stay away from those little squirt bottles of lemon juice. Although convenient it has lost a lot of its nutrients by the time it makes it into your water.
By the way, I did end up passing my Biochem final like a boss. Well, actually my grade was a B- but hey nobody’s perfect.
