Can Tea Really Help You Lose Weight?
All true teas come from the same leaves known as Camellia Sinensis. However, as the leaves are processed in different ways, they also produce different types of tea.
This can drastically affect how powerful the tea is for helping with weight loss.
Drinking tea can help you lose weight and burn more fat for a couple of reasons. The first is that many teas contain polyphenols, also known as catechins and polyphenols.
Catechins are natural antioxidants that help fight damage-causing free radicals, inflammation, and cell damage.1 Catechins will help boost your metabolism by allowing your body to break down fats more quickly.2
Did you know tea can contain up to 1000% more polyphenols than eating fruits and vegetables.3 Polyphenols increase thermogenesis, which is how your body burns calories to produce heat. This increases your fat burning metabolism.4
Many of the weight loss teas you’ll find here also contain caffeine. Caffeine is a natural thermogenic, meaning it increases your body’s energy use. This increases your metabolism by causing your body to burn off more calories.5
When you combine catechins and caffeine together you create a powerful weight loss combination just from drinking more tea.
Best Slimming Tea Detox
Use this method to get the fastest weight loss results possible from drinking tea.
Follow intermittent fasting in the mornings to maximize the amount of fat burned from drinking the tea. When fasting, your body utilizes its fat stores for fuel since it has no incoming calories to use instead.6
And fasting helps your body detox faster by giving it break from constantly digesting food. When not eating, your body has more time to focus on cleaning up waste and repairing cells, this helps to get rid of toxins.7
Have a low-carb meal the night before for dinner. A high protein meal with veggies such as grilled chicken and broccoli is great. Then start fasting throughout the night without eating anything.
When you wake up make 1-2 cups of tea using the detox slimming tea. This tea contains ginger which is known to support your body’s natural detoxification processes.8
Ginger has anti-inflammatory compounds that support your liver (your body’s natural detoxification processor).9 It also enhances circulation, allowing toxins to be transported to organs responsible for detoxing.10
This tea contains caffeine that will get your metabolism burning fat. And it’ll help to curb hunger so you can keep fasting for longer. This will give you even better results faster.11
- Supports a healthy metabolism and helps manage cravings (used by monks for centuries as a fasting aid)
- Catechins + gut health superfoods support healthy digestion
- ZERO preservatives, refined sugar, or additives
- USDA organic + triple toxin screened for purity
10 Best Weight Loss Teas
When you drink tea the right way and in the right amounts, you’ll create the best weight-loss tea detox possible.
Try to drink at the bare minimum of 3 cups of tea every day. This is going to be the lowest amount of tea according to most studies to start seeing some results.12
Steep the tea for at least a few minutes to extract all the powerful catechins and caffeine. Drinking your tea too fast can make you feel nauseous and can even upset your stomach.
Try not to drink your weight loss teas too late in the day otherwise, the caffeine can disrupt your quality of sleep.
Matcha Green Tea
By far, my favorite weight loss tea is green tea. Most specifically, it’s matcha green tea.
Matcha green tea is made when the whole leaf is ground up and consumed as part of the tea. This allows you to get many times more antioxidant benefits than drinking regular green tea.
Matcha green tea contains the richest source of antioxidants in the form of EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate). EGCG boosts your metabolism, helping you lose weight easier. You’ll get 137x more EGCG with matcha green tea compared to regular green tea!13
This weight loss tea also contains chlorophyll, which will boost your liver’s ability to detox.14 Chlorophyll binds to toxins like heavy metals and chemicals, helping to prevent your body from absorbing them.
This will help to remove toxic junk that can build up in your body such as cadmium and mercury. Studies have found these heavy metals like these can lead to weight gain.15
This study in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition & Exercise Metabolism found matcha green tea was able to enhance how much fat was burned while exercising.16 So if you’re planning on exercising, even walking, then try drinking some green tea beforehand!
Yerba Mate
Another one of the best weight loss teas is yerba mate. Many say yerba mate has “the strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate.”
Yerba mate is very rich in antioxidants such as xanthines, caffeoyl derivatives, saponins, and polyphenols. These compounds work together to boost energy, reduce inflammation, and protect against oxidative stress.17
One study found that yerba mate was effective at reducing appetite while also boosting metabolism.18 This makes yerba mate a great intermittent fasting drink since it helps curb hunger while kickstarting fat burning.
Yerba mate reduces fat cell growth in your body, lowers weight gain, boosts calorie burning, and improves fat-burning metabolism.19 Yerba mate has the ability to reduce the amount of cells to become fat-storing cells… meaning less fat being stored in your body!
Here’s a study in which researchers found that drinking yerba mate tea can increase one’s body’s ability to burn more stored fat for energy.20 Yerba mate significantly boosts fatty acid oxidation during exercise, burns more fat for fuel, and helps shift energy utilization towards your fat stores.
And here’s a 12-week study finding overweight people who drank yerba mate tea significantly decreased both body fat mass and their body fat percentage. They also had a lower waist-hip ratio, meaning they dropped stubborn belly fat.21
Green Tea
Green tea is probably the most well-known and popular weight loss tea on the planet. There is a lot of science backing up its effectiveness for weight loss.
Studies have found green tea can help with weight loss by:
- Boosts Metabolism
- Enhances Fat Burning
- Suppresses Appetite
- Supports Insulin Sensitivity
I try to drink around 3 cups of green tea per day, either regularly or in matcha form.
Green tea is the best tea for losing belly fat as the catechins in it help to release fat from your fat cells. Most specifically, the fat on your belly. One study saw a 7.7% greater reduction in abdominal fat than those not drinking green tea.22
Green tea catechins enhance your liver’s ability to burn fat into energy and increase overall fat-burning in your body, especially during exercise. The catechins work together with caffeine to boost your metabolism and increase the breakdown of fat stores.23
Type 2 diabetics can also benefit from drinking catechin-rich green tea. This study found that it significantly reduced waist circumference, increased adiponectin levels, and improved insulin levels.24 Adiponectin helps your body use sugar and fat better, leading to improvements in blood sugar management.
Drinking green tea can increase your calories burned by 4.6% over 24 hours. This means you could easily burn over 100 calories per day just by drinking green tea!25
One more way drinking green tea can help you lose weight is by lowering ghrelin levels. Ghrelin is the “hunger hormone” that stimulates appetite, so reducing it can help you eat less, leading to more weight loss.26
Pu-erh Tea
Pu-erh tea is a fermented Chinese tea from the Yunnan province. It undergoes a fermentation and aging process that enhances its taste and increases antioxidant content.
The powerful antioxidants in pu-erh tea include catechins, flavonoids, theaflavins, and gallic acid. These antioxidants not only reduce inflammation but also help with weight loss.
Pu-erh tea can also help protect your skin against photo-aging.27 This is the accelerated aging that can happen to your skin from damage caused by the sun.
When you drink pu-erh tea, your body will be able to get rid of more toxins that can build up. This toxic junk in your body can have a big impact on how much weight you gain. The antioxidants and polyphenols in pu-erh tea help cleanse the body by aiding liver function, breaking down fats, and improving digestion.28
If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, try drinking pu-erh tea. It contains GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid), a neurotransmitter that promotes relaxation and has a calming effect on the nervous system.29 Chronic stress can end up leading to weight gain by releasing cortisol, causing an increase in hunger and storage of fat in the belly.
A big study30 on pu-erh tea found it led to:
- Significant weight loss
- Fat reduction (including arms, legs, and hip/belly area)
- Improved lipid profile (reduced cholesterol & triglycerides)
- Appetite control
Oolong Tea
Oolong tea is a traditional Chinese tea that falls between green and black teas. It’s partially fermented giving it a unique flavor that’s also rich in antioxidants.
It’s often known as “black dragon” due to its dark, twisted leaves of tea that look like a dragon shape. And according to Chinese belief, oolong tea has traditionally been used to lower body weight.
The powerful catechins in oolong tea can aid in weight loss by boosting metabolism, reducing fat absorption, enhancing fat burning, and suppressing appetite.
This study found that those who drank oolong tea lost 6 more pounds than non-drinkers over a 6-week period. Oolong tea reduces body fat and prevents obesity by improving lipid metabolism.31
Your lipid metabolism works by turning the fat you eat into smaller molecules that can either be burned off or stored in fat cells. Improving your lipid metabolism means your body is better at using stored fat for energy instead of keeping it stuck in fat cells.
In one study, male participants drinking oolong tea had 12% higher fat burning increase than those just drinking water. They also had a 3.4% increase in calorie burning.32
Black Tea
Black tea is also considered one of the best weight loss teas you can drink daily. It contains both caffeine and L-theanine. When both combined they create a powerful, energetic, focused effect on the drinker.
Drinking black tea can help with weight loss by a few methods:33
- Reduced calorie intake by inhibiting digestion of fats and sugars
- Improve lipid metabolism (activates AMPK)
- Inhibits fat cell formation
- Reduced oxidative stress
L-theanine is a very potent antioxidant that can give you a calm feeling. When combined with caffeine, it creates an “energetic calm” that enhances focus. This is an ideal calm mental state for studying or working on complex tasks.34
Black tea contains the highest amount of caffeine compared to the other teas on this list. The fermentation process in black tea causes it to have higher caffeine. This is why I recommend drinking your black tea earlier in the morning.
Black tea also has the power to support your body’s ability to create microbial metabolites. What are these? These metabolites are the result of digestion by our gut microbiota and play a crucial role in gut health, immune system, and overall metabolism.35
White Tea
White tea is often considered to be the least processed tea of them all. It’s made from the young leaves of the tea plant, and it undergoes very little processing, which preserves its high level of antioxidants.
The high catechins in white tea boost your metabolism and increase fat oxidation. Studies have found that drinking white tea can prevent the formation of new fat cells.36 This is due to white tea’s high polyphenol content.
White tea can also enhance lipolysis, the process your body uses to break down stored fat into fatty acids that are burned for energy. The ability to promote fat breakdown and prevent fat formation makes white tea very effective for weight loss.37
Peppermint Tea
Peppermint tea is a caffeine-free and refreshing herbal infusion made from the leaves of peppermint. It is a great choice for relaxation and can be drunk later in the day.
Peppermint tea can help curb hunger! One of the hardest problems of weight loss is the hunger pains that can come from lowering your calories.
The menthol in peppermint has been shown to have appetite-suppressing effects. This is because of peppermint’s ability to soothe the digestive system and relax the muscles in the gut, creating a feeling of fullness.38
Plus, we all know the cravings you can get for your favorite junk foods when you’ve started dieting. Drinking more peppermint tea can help lower your cravings.39 This allows you to keep losing weight without binging.
Peppermint can also improve your physical performance, which can enhance exercise output. One study found peppermint enhanced respiratory function, improved reaction times, physiological improvements, and stronger grip force.40
Lemon Tea
Lemon tea combines tea (black or green) with lemon juice and/or lemon slices. The lemon gives the tea a zesty and refreshing taste that helps to balance out the bitterness of tea.
Hesperidin and naringenin are polyphenols found in lemons that improve metabolism and fat burning. These powerful compounds reduce body fat and improve lipid profiles. They make it easier for your body to metabolize fats and sugars.41
Like lemon water, lemon tea also contains limonene, a powerful antioxidant found in the citrus rind oil of the fruit. Limonene helps with digestive support, has anti-inflammatory effects, and supports liver detoxification processes.42
Limonene can help reduce bloating. It’s even been used since ancient times as a natural mild diuretic. It works by producing gastric juices and supporting healthy bowel movements.
This study by the European Journal of Pharmacology found that limonene has a therapeutic effect on metabolic disorders. Limonene has the ability to reduce the size of white and brown fat cells, lower triglycerides, and improve blood sugar.43
Rooibos Tea
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea that’s rich in antioxidants, has low tannin levels (less bitter), has a naturally sweet flavor, and has strong anti-inflammatory properties.
Aspalathin and quercetin are two powerful antioxidants in rooibos tea that can increase your body’s ability to produce glutathione. Glutathione is known as the “master antioxidant,” and it helps maintain the balance of other antioxidants in the body.
Glutathione is essential for detoxifying harmful substances in the liver. It binds to toxins and helps eliminate them from the body. You’ll also have improved insulin sensitivity, lower oxidative stress, and increased energy production with higher levels of glutathione.
Aspalathin is also a very potent anti-inflammatory that helps regulate blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance.44 Stable blood sugar levels help prevent spikes in hunger and food cravings, making it easier to stick to your diet.
Reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol are also a benefit of rooibos tea.45 When you have too many stress hormones, like cortisol, pumping in your body, you are more likely to trigger hunger and fat storage (especially belly fat).
